Digital Empathy Gap
The event Digital Empathy Gap is an interactive workshop designed to explore how communication changes in digital environments and why empathy is often reduced online. In today’s fast-paced digital world, people frequently respond to content without fully considering the emotions or perspectives of others. This session aims to help participants understand this phenomenon and develop the skills needed for more responsible and empathetic online behavior.
The workshop begins with a short introduction that invites participants to reflect on whether people behave differently online compared to face-to-face interactions. This opening discussion naturally leads into an explanation of the Digital Empathy Gap, highlighting factors such as the absence of non-verbal cues, the effects of anonymity, and the influence of social media platforms on how we communicate.
Participants then take part in an interactive activity where they evaluate real-life style online comments and decide whether they would feel comfortable saying them in person. This activity encourages critical thinking and opens a discussion about why people often communicate more harshly online.
The session continues with a focus on digital media and information literacy. Participants learn how online content is designed to trigger emotional reactions and how misleading or false information can spread quickly. Through guided analysis of sample posts, they practice identifying emotional manipulation and questioning the reliability of information.
In the next part of the workshop, participants engage in a role-play exercise that simulates an online comment section. By taking on different roles, such as a content creator, supportive user, or negative commenter, they experience how various types of communication affect others. This activity helps build awareness of the emotional impact of online interactions.
The workshop concludes with a reflective discussion in which participants share their thoughts and experiences. They are encouraged to consider how they can communicate more thoughtfully and respectfully in digital spaces. As a final step, each participant makes a personal commitment to practice empathy online.
By the end of the event, participants will have a deeper understanding of the Digital Empathy Gap, improved critical thinking skills related to digital media, and practical tools for fostering empathy and responsible communication in their everyday online interactions.
